Strengths

  • Good research capability
  • Good cavalry and infantry

Weaknesses

  • Economic reliance on having a pool of infantry to produce resources results in a lack of flexibility

Although Normandie can be said to be a Norse faction, in truth it differs from the other Norse factions in three major areas. The first is that like the Varangians further east, the Normans do not have access to Vikingr, but instead raise Peasant Levies. The second is that unlike all other Norse factions, the Normans can raise almost every siege weapon, except the Trebuchet. Finally, the Norse have access to Jarl Cavalry - which, while somewhat inferior to the shock cavalry of many non-Norse

  1. No. It's for NORMANDY. I don't know why this is still here, asturias is a vassal.

The Normans, are Nordic-Germanic mixed peoples. Normandy was founded by Rollo, a Norseman, and at the start of the mod, the leader who swears to uphold their values. I'd like the Normans to be a Germanic faction primarily, besides their leadership. They could also field a mixed bag of Norse and Germanic units?
  3. Along with aid from Brittany will make the Normans a fierce foe.

Again, Mongols or Spanish could be good especially the Spanish. But do yo want a fast naval rusher/with good scouting, or a powerful cav faction that becomes more powerful the more land it controls?

I visualize this - Normans and Frisians (on a ctw, for ex.) would be allies. The Frisians weren't known for their cavalry - but Brittany was I do believe and could be the ones who aid both factions and then it won't be so bad , the fact I had to cut Brittany.

Normandy (Normans - Norse with Germanic and Frankish influence, could also use Celtic influence; depending on the setting someone's doing they would be In war with the Franks to retain their pagan beliefs and not be assimilated into their empire) - The Normans are fearless - with Francia focused on vicious domination of Normandy itself, Frisia, and Saxony and its allies, the Normans will rely on a lot of help from Brittany another under the Franks' eye for domination. The Normans and Bretons have had very close ties since the capturing of the territory by King Rollo. The Bretons pay them tribute, and help them field good cavalry. Leaders: King Rollo the Great, William Longsword, Richard the Fearless, Richard II Religion/Culture: Norse Pagans/Norse and Frankish Norway (Jarldom of Vestfold) Leaders: King Harold Fairhair, Eirik Bloodaxe, King Haakon, Best Unit: Skjaldberi (Heavy Infantry - Shield Bearer) Strengths: Field heavy infantry and a boost in wealth production and mining capabilities due to their homeland's location. Weaknesses: Their cavalry are expensive, less than the  to reflect their lack of horses and constant warfare. Their powerful Jarl will hopefully offset this for a strategic player. Friesland is a balanced faction - they must contend with securing their border while being quite adept at rushing given slow unit recruitment time. Weaknesses: Their cavalry are more expensive, to reflect their lack of horses and constant warfare. Their forts and cities take less time to build with better constitution.

  9. The player will need to utilize the mining and wealth they gain as well as their allies' support to fight off invading factions. The best offense is a good defense and Rollo the Great knew this. He fought for the freedom of his peoples' religions, be it old Germanic or Norse, they are a mixed group fighting for freedom against the monstrous Frankish armies. Allies: Brittany: Brittany is a protectorate of Normandy, they are more than an ally. King Rollo felt it was of greatest necessity that their fertile lands and supplies of horses be defended by both Frisia and his own kingdom. The Franks continually push to take out all three and they know without Brittany, Normandy and Frisia would suffer due to lack of strong cavalry, whilst the Franks field cavalry capable of destroying this coalition altogether.
  10. They field fast-moving Germanic troops as well, and as an added bonus strong , fast light raiding cavalry.
  11. Their Jarl (tough to represent King Rollo on the battlefield) is trained with bodyguards, has more health than any other  Nordic factions's leader, and has more craft.
  12. Velvetclaw

Mining and wealth? that would imply either the Germans or the Inca are the best match for them.

  15. Northern Ravens / Project 666 related Q: what weapons do Skjaldberi carry?
  16. Ubba Ragnarson

Axes and shields, swords and shields. Spears and shields, less so, but they did.
  17. obviously to stem off cavalry
  18. even javaelins, really
  19. shieldmaidens and shieldbearers were the bread and butter of a viking army
  20. shield walls are not possible presumably , formation would be incredible to use in the game. lol
  21. @Ubba Ragnarson
    obviously to stem off cavalry

    Velvetclaw

Oh so you mean they would've had an appearance not too dissimilar from the axe and spear-armed versions of the Norman Milites or the Russian Gridny of Rise of Kings: Chronicles?

  22. Ubba Ragnarson

Correct. Both those units could be changed and used for shieldbearers - just perhaps with the weakness against cavalry taken away. replaced by, ranged or something.

  23. They would have used a shield formation, the cavalry wouldnt get through especially not the spear -wielding shieldbearers units.

  24. please take a look at the factions, and the allies/vassals for a basic overview of the mechanic if you can. i have yet to do the vikings' vassals beside Cornwallum

Kingdom of Normandy The Normans are fearless - with Francia focused on vicious domination of Normandy itself, Frisia, and Saxony and its allies, the Normans will rely on a lot of help from Brittany another under the Franks' eye for domination. The Normans and Bretons have had very close ties since the capturing of the territory by King Rollo. The Bretons pay them tribute, and help them field good cavalry. Leaders: King Rollo the Great, William Longsword, Richard the Fearless, Richard II Religion/Culture: Asatru/Norse and Frankish culture Leaders: King Harold Fairhair, Jarl Sigfried , King Eirik Bloodaxe, King Haakon, Best Units:  Skjaldberi (Heavy Infantry - Shield Bearer), Reaver (Quick, cheap infantry armed with short swords and light armor, and variant armed with Javelin. these men were built for guerilla warfare. Breton Kavalery: The Breton horsemen are lightly armoured however swift and capable. This is a unit for both the Normans and Frisians. There are two variants, one ranged, one armed with sword and shield. Strengths: Field heavy infantry and a boost in wealth production and mining capabilities due to their homeland's location. (on top of whatever else comes with vanilla nation) Weaknesses: Their cavalry are expensive, less than the to reflect their lack of horses and constant warfare. Their powerful Jarl will hopefully offset this for a strategic player through the help of Brittany which is both a Frisian and Norman protectorate - a defensive pact, as such.... Friesland is a balanced faction - they must contend with securing their border while being quite adept at rushing given slow unit recruitment time.

Unlike all western factions, the USA has no access heavy cavalry variants, but this is very much offset by the fact that their cavalry, being medium cavalry, is highly versatile. Cuirassiers may be mighty but do not function well due to their speed and cost. Thus, when needed, mass as many medium cav units to swarm enemy cuirassiers, or break your cavalry units into individual groups for fast hammer-and-anvil strikes on unprotected targets, such as skirmishers and isolated line infantry.
