Strengths

  • Good research capability
  • Good cavalry and infantry

Weaknesses

  • Economic reliance on having a pool of infantry to produce resources results in a lack of flexibility

Ironically, for all its strengths, Norway is one of the three Norse factions that can't train Vikingr (only Uppland and Denmark may train them, while Russia and Normandie train Peasant Levies instead). On the other hand, the presence of the Karvi in the Norwegian roster means that Norway tends to do better on water maps, where it can use Karvi in the same way as its eastern neighbours rely on Vikingr on land. As a result, Norway tends to do better on maps with significant amounts of water, although it can still train Vikingr if it can seize control of a settlement with a Peasants' Commune on it.

Marines are the heart of the American war machine. With the ability to entrench themselves, the Marines will be useful for creating fortified positions which will be hard

  1. Historical Context: Norway was , for much of its history, a region of petty kingdoms fighting each other for control of different regions. Eventually, two powers came to control most of Norway: The Kingdom of Vestfold under the new King, Harald Fairhair , a strong, tactical leader who set upon taking over all of Norway. He began with the petty kingdoms - and worked his way west. Eventually, King Eirik of Hordaland found the Kingdom of Hordaland-Rogaland under threat. King Eirik controlled most of the western regions, and *found, at first, Harald's Kingdom no threat... he was wrong. These two kingdoms eventually fought several battles with both Eirik and Harald fierce leaders... until the decisive Battle of Hafrsfjord: King Harald led a decisive naval victory over Eirik, slaughtering him in the process, and crowned himself the First King of unified Norway known as the  Kingdom of Vestfold. From there, Harald wasted no time - conquering the rest of Norway, destroying those who would not assimilate while vassalizing the Jarldoms which bent the knee . When the dust was settled, so to speak, Vestfold amassed a great army and sailed west - joining the Danes in their conquest of England.  Toward the later years, Olaf II, known as Olaf the Stout or Saint Olaf to the Christians, adhered to a policy of forceable conversion of all Norse Pagans within his land. Not only him, but there are many leaders that will be featured and should be. I am glad to see this faction back separated from their ally as they are unique within their own right.

Kingdom of Norway Leaders: King(s) Harald Fairhair, King Olaf II, King Olaf Tryv Eirik Bloodaxe, Sigurd the Mighty, Harald Bluetooth, Haakon the Good, Saint Olaf "the Stout", Sweyn Forkbeard, Cnut the Great, Best Units:  Svenner (Ranged Cavalry armed with bow/javelins, useful for raiding because they are also quick), Huskarl Kavaleri (Heavily armored cavalry with swords/spears; A footman variant will be featured for a different Norse faction), Skjoldbitere Shield-Biters; Similar to the standard Shield Bearer - however less armored, and quicker with faster DPS. slightly more expensive. Basically combination of a berserkir and a Skjaldberi , these troops are rare among the Norse. Ulfsark  (Lightly armoured unit , many in Norway's case gathered from their Vassal Jarldoms - Lightly armoured, they are strong in number and fast, as well as cheap to train. Similar to Ulfhedir in their appearances though less armoured) Norse and Ásatrú culture and religion

  4. Ubba Ragnarson

Strengths: Norwegians field more vassals given the vast tribes living in Hålogaland and other areas. They are forced tribute of horses, making their cavalry more capable than the Danes' overall, but their infantry are not as strong. They are a more middle-line faction than the highly aggressive Danes'. Norway have a great advantage in mining capabilities as well. They are more adaptable at playing defensivly than the Danes, yet field better offense abilities than Uppland. Weaknesses: Similar to Denmark, but more adept to their homeland, the Norwegians have less capability for rushing than Denmark and can be considered a middle-ground faction. Their provisions still need to be upkept, as no matter where in Scandinavia, this is a weakness. However, with Norway's amount of vassal states this is all but negligible comparatively... For Denmark, the land is still unfertile and as such will continue to be the Danes' only true weakness.

  5. Vassals: The Norwegians field other petty "kingdoms" and such, and will be featured warriors from different chiefdoms of Hålogaland and others. Most prominent is what unified Norway - the killing of Jarl Eirik of Hordaland. Jarldom of Hordaland: A reluctant vassal, after the defeat of their Jarl, Eirik, by King Harald Fairhair - they now serve Norway by lessening their food hardships. If possible also supplying viking warriors to the cause and AGAIN lessening their previsions weakness. Clans of Hålogaland:  The clans of Hålogaland, though most reluctant, still are forced to pay tribute and supply tribute and naval units as well as cheap viking infantry to supplement the Norwegian ranks. Being on the west coast of Norway, they also add a fishing bonus (tribute) and naval ships. see our page for more information to implement them. Since we have no revolution script, we will just have to count, even the slaying of St. Olaf by the legendary chieftain, Tore Hund (Thor the Hound) as simple historical context. Under the banner of Vestfold, Harald Fairhair did take control of many petty kingdoms which will be simplified into a powerful vassal for Norway. There are too many "kingdoms", and Jarldoms to count before Norway became unified and as such this is their most powerful vassal with peoples from all over supplying tribute and warriors. King Olaf the Stout (St. Olaf) went on to purge the entirety of Norway's pagan tribes before being slaughtered by the Chieftain, Tore Hund. (See the Halogaland page for more info
