Strengths

  • Good research capability
  • Good cavalry and infantry

Weaknesses

  • Economic reliance on having a pool of infantry to produce resources results in a lack of flexibility

With a preponderence set towards technology, research and resource-gathering, the United States is a faction that requires strong strategic flair to use. The United States shares some units with England and France, but in other areas it also has other units worth noting: a line of medium ranged and melee cavalry; a Marine unit

  1. Either the Spanish or Danish will suit them well, since I recall that one of the things Alfred the Great did, in response to the Norse invasions, was to raise a fleet.

  2. Queen Elizabeth I may be credit with making Britain a naval power, and Oliver Cromwell the brainchild of the British Army, but it was Alfred the Great who got the ball rolling. But all told, I do not know enough.

  3. There is talk of Alfred the Great's interest in patronage of the arts and culture, but taht sets this faction on a collision course with other factions - most notably, the Bulgars and the Franks - on what few bonuses remain.

oh, wessex is in my own notes already completed. I need to update them and such but they'll be posted; i thought they were.

  5. Yes, i know. The replaced faction for Wessex MUST be powerful. He did get the ball-rolling on a good navy with his client states but his army was very strong as well and they eventually learned viking tactics to fight them. Look into the battle of edington if you have a chance - very decisive victory for Alfred the Great

Wessex (West Saxons) - Most defensive faction, strongest of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. Wessex builds up to be a balanced faction capable of strong offensive invasions as well. Alfred wasn't ready for the crown when his brother died in battle against the Danes but upheld his trust in God and set out to defend Wessex, to his final breath! The West Saxons were known for their strong defense before the Norse came, hence how they held out against the Norsemen so well. They were known to learn tactics of the Vikings, eventually, and with King Alfred at the head (historically) they repelled and were known as "the last kingdom" after the Great Heathen Army landed, and then indeed the Summer Army under Jarl Guthrum not long after. Britannia was overwhelmed, and King Alfred, with his God on his side, did his best to uphold Wessex and never became a puppet as other English kingdoms did such as East Anglia, near immediately the Vikings held all of England and thankfully he was well-read and did indeed document everything in his chronicle: today known as the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles. Best Units: Eorl's Thegns (Heavy royal Cavalry armed with sword and shield), Cynehlatbrd Housecarl  (Heavy Infantry, typically Thegn's bodyguard. In wartime these men show their valor), Ceolsige (Wessex' unique heavy ship) , Byrnwiggend Seaxes (Heavy Axemen, mid-late game unit) ---- Allies/Client States Sussex (South Saxons): Sussex was close to Wessex and helped them with reinforcements in many times of war. They aid with their capable light infantry. Essex (East Saxons): The east Saxons were subjugated soon after by the Vikings but for our time start, they are an ally of Wessex and provide help to both them and East Anglia in the form of tribute and their own infantry in times of need.

  7. Kingdom of Kent: Kent, the most powerful bar-none of Wessex' allies. They supplied the cavalry to them that they desperately needed and fought in battles galore with the West Saxons. Leaders: King Aethelred I, King Alfred the Great, King Aethelstan, King Edgar, King Aethelred II "The Unready", King Edmund II (Aethelstan united England fullfilling his grandfather Alfred's dream; defeated the Scots, Danes and other Vikings to become England's first true king... for a time)

Strengths/Weaknesses: Strengths: Field the finest Anglo Saxon infantry, bar none. They receive cspsble horsemen from Kent as well as their own fertile land allows crops to prosper. Field the best navy, as far as that goes. They have the aid of many allies, but the question remains if any of this will be enough to stop the

Folkmoot, Witan?

According to Ubba, folkmoot applies to fyrds and allows access to better crap infantry. Witan is a king's council and should provide for better militia-level units.
